Blackfriars Priory School

Description:

The Blackfriars Acknowledgement of Kaurna Country Artwork by mantirridesign was installed at Blackfriars Priory School, Prospect SA in 2022 and is part of the school’s $6.4M western campus redevelopment project. The three components that make up the artwork are based upon the Narntu tree - Callitris preissii, Southern Cypress Pine. What is now known as Prospect Road (Padnipadninya tapa) was originally a Kaurna walking track from the now Adelaide CBD to St Kilda area. Other local Kaurna sites and stories of cultural significance along with local fauna are depicted within the artwork to provide students with a sense of place and a sense of Kaurna Country that immediately surrounds their school.

A Welcome to Kaurna Country statement in both Kaurna and English languages features on one of the artworks and is accompanied with a QR code, so people can hear the Welcome in the Kaurna language, as well as learn about the key narratives of the artwork.
