Kaurna murlapaka
Description:
Located in a new yarning circle at Woodcroft College, Woodcroft acknowledges Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of Kaurna Country and welcomes people to the college’s ELC, Junior School and Gymnasium precincts from the northern carpark.
The artwork inspired by the Kaurna shield (murlapaka) is an important and iconic symbol of Kaurna people and culture. The white and red colours of the artwork were inspired by the traditional markings and colours of the Kaurna shield.
On the inside of the artwork, is a Welcome statement in the Kaurna and English language, as well as a scene of the local Christie Creek, including a sky map of Emu Creek and Main South Road. The artwork represents both male and female Kaurna people living along Christie Creek. Today, there is a large Kaurna community living in the local southern suburbs of Adelaide and emu’s were once plentiful across the Woodcroft landscape and the surrounding area and are featured in spirit within the Sky Country above.
