Underpass Overpass

Description:

This artwork is a collaboration piece by Paul Herzich, Robert Owen and TCL. It was installed at the Gawler Bypass end of the Northern Expressway at Gawler West SA in 2011 and is part of the $564M Northern Expressway Project.

The gateway artwork depicts multi-dimensional travel across the state of South Australia and is an integration of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art styles. Both artworks are 97.0m long x 4.0m high and decorate the abutment retaining walls under the overpass.

The conceptual drive for the installation was to create a road corridor/landscape experience that was sensitive to the expansive plains context. Underpass Overpass delivers senses of populated areas from the city of Adelaide environment to the outer reaches of the South Australian outback.
