Wangu Poles

Description:

What was once bitumen and car parking along the northern fringe of the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace Campus, is now a new place for celebration, cultural exchange and learning that recognises and celebrates the Kaurna Aboriginal people and our deep connections to the Adelaide CBD (Tartanyangga - Place of the Red Kangaroo).

The Wangu (Seven) Poles Artwork by mantirridesign is part of the multi-award winning Kaurna Learning Circle and it contains aspects of the relationship Kaurna people have between Wardlipari (the Milky Way) and Karrawirra pari (River Torrens). This artwork also embodies traditional ritual knowledge of Kaurna Ancestors, which was part of their life on the river. The artwork creates a new entry statement for the northern entrance to campus and can be seen from the other side of the river, and from the top of the University’s Elsie Cornish red brick stairs, by day and night.
