Pukipuki

Description:

The artwork for the iconic Salisbury Clock Tower and seating along John Street were produced by mantirridesign with the generosity, support and voice of Senior Kaurna/Narungga Elders - Uncle Frank Wangutya Wanganeen and Uncle Dookie, Dr Kevin O’Loughlin OAM.

The artworks are Kaurna cultural markers of two ancient Kaurna stories within the local Salisbury area. A very long time ago, Pukipuki (book-ee, book-ee), the dingo lived on this land. Its place in the journey of Kaurna culture connects Kaurna people with mob in Queensland and beyond. Dingo footprints are seen as traversing across Kaurna Country in spirit.

What was once a meeting place along a main trade route for Kaurna, Narungga, Ngadjuri and Nukunu people is a place now called the Vernal Pools. They lie adjacent to the southern end of the Parafield Airport. These natural low lying depressions that fill by localised rainfall events, support unique wildlife and were freshwater resources for thirsty travellers. This ancient story teaches us about sharing and protecting freshwater resources, the creation of landforms and the importance of people and local fauna and flora working together.
