University of Technology Sydney

Description:

The University of Technology Sydney - Indigenous Residential College Design Competition was led by Nguluway DesignInc and Bates Smart in association with Mantirri Design, who provided specialist cultural design and landscape architecture advice.

The Country centric design proposal embodies core principles of UTS-IRC being Identity, Connectivity and Sustainability, and it reflects the insights, voices, stories and perspectives of the local Gadigal people whilst remaining welcoming for other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous students.

Drawing inspiration from nature, connections to Country and the idea of re-inserting County, the landscape design creates an immersive and connected experience across all levels. A precinct heart anchors connections to Country. Expanded, generous, informal and seamlessly integrated into IRC programs and neighbourhood. This is a space that asserts Gadigal identity and support for everyday life and a range of cultural practices, such as Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies.
